5:1 Asset Based Thinking Challenge

When we work deeply with clients, they are often dismayed and embarrassed by their obvious character flaws.  And it just won’t let them move forward in their coaching.

As we know from Deficit Based Thinking, our minds can grip onto our shortcomings and not let go!  So in our exercise, we look for a main character flaw and then find 5 assets that arise from that one deficit.

We tell clients, “We think about deficits all of the time. We focus on the problems. We think the world is a problem. Now write 5 assets that can come from each deficit.”

I had a client who stalls when making decisions. In his words, he procrastinates when it comes to decision making, because it takes him so long to think things through.

He was tasked to find some potential assets that can come out of his procrastination.

He decided that he was on the whole,

  1. More thoughtful.

  2. Better at financial decisions, due to his multi-angled considerations.

  3. More deliberate in his thinking process.

  4. Made fewer impulsive mistakes.

  5. Better at calculating risk.
